Many educators assume that children with an AD (H) S diagnosis can get along well in normal schools. Whether this works depends above all on whether the communication between teachers and parents is correct and there is a willingness to devote oneself to the topic. Instead of reproaching each other, it is important that parents and teachers seek constructive dialogue and work together rather than against each other. Many teachers are unfamiliar with the problem so parents should pass on their information if necessary. The days are getting longer again. The desire to move increases: jogging, playing football outdoors or going to the gym after work. Sport is good for metabolism, the immune system and well-being – but is it also good for sleep?
A popular belief is that anyone who lifts weights or gets on a racing bike sleeps worse. Disturbed sleep in turn increases the risk of accidents, heart attacks, obesity and mental disorders. The German Society for Sleep Research and Sleep Medicine (DGSM) points out in a guidebook that exercise too shortly before bed can disturb sleep. New studies show a contradicting picture.
Meta-analysis examines context
Sports scientists from ETH Zurich wrote one in the journal in February "Sports Medicine" published meta-analysis evaluated 23 studies. Their result: Those who train intensively less than an hour before bed actually run the risk of taking longer to fall asleep and getting less sleep. On the other hand, the movement did not affect other aspects such as phases of deep sleep or the frequency of waking up.
And mind you, the negative effects only relate to intensive training very shortly before going to bed. In general, evening exercise – i.e. exercise less than four hours before going to bed – does not affect sleep. On the contrary: late exercise can even improve sleep quality. However, the effect is small. "Similar to normal night-to-night fluctuations and therefore likely to be clinically irrelevant"write the scientists.
Compared to earlier individual studies, the meta-analysis is quite meaningful. But it has limitations. Above all, the researchers did not compare evening athletes with morning or afternoon athletes – but with non-athletes. In addition, only studies with people without sleep disorders were included. And it was almost exclusively about men of normal weight between 19 and 28 years of age.
Exercise at different times of the day
In a study review from 2015, however, American psychologists compared exercise at different times of the day. In addition, the study participants were from different age groups. The researchers were able to show that people who had exercised less than three hours before going to bed even woke up less frequently than those who had exercised in the afternoon or early evening (three to eight hours before going to bed).
The time of day did not affect other factors, such as how long it takes to fall asleep. And the positive results only applied to occasional exercise (less than once a week). "There have not been enough studies of regular exercise that took into account the time of day"the scientists said.
Movement affects the biorhythm
There is even less research on people who already have insomnia. And that is almost one in three in Germany, according to federal reports. Australian researchers recently looked at evening exercise specifically in overweight men with insomnia – and found no evidence of poorer sleep after exercise in the evening than in the morning or afternoon.
On the other hand, movement can obviously influence the biorhythm and act as a timer, similar to light – a new study from the USA suggests. The German guidelines for the treatment of sleep disorders make no explicit statement about exercise as a therapy method – the data are too thin for that.
Investigations so far with a few subjects
The fact that the study situation is still ambiguous is probably due to the fact that usually only a few test subjects are examined. The Swiss meta-analysis includes 23 studies – but only 275 people, i.e. an average of twelve people per study. The smaller the number of participants, the greater the risk that the results would look different in other samples. In fact, the results changed in part when the researchers excluded individual studies from the analysis. In other words: the results are anything but robust.

Incidentally, scientists are still puzzling over which mechanisms are supposed to impair sleep in the evening. Higher body temperature? Aching? Heartbeat? Hunger at night? Previous studies are not clear on this either.
